God Is Not Your Backup Plan

There’s a habit we don’t always notice… we make our plans. We map out our timelines. We do the research. We ask everyone else what they think…and then, when it doesn’t work out, we say,“okay God… I guess I’ll give it to You now.” As if He was waiting on the bench the whole time. As if He’s the last resort instead of the first call. I'm guilty of it myself. But God was never meant to be your backup plan. He’s not your “just in case.” He’s your only way through.

Because here’s the truth, when we treat God like a backup plan, we end up carrying burdens we were never meant to hold. We stress. We overthink. We try to control outcomes that were never ours to control. All while God is gently saying,“why didn’t you come to Me first?” Imagine what your life would look like if God wasn’t your afterthought…but your starting point. Before the decision, you pray. Before the anxiety, you surrender. Before the plan, you ask. Not because you’ve run out of options… but because you know He’s the best one.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take." Proverbs 3:5-6 This verse doesn’t say,“trust Him when everything else fails.” It says, in all your ways.

Sometimes we don’t go to God first because:

  • we think we can handle it ourselves

  • we want control

  • we’re afraid His answer won’t match our plan

But delayed obedience is still disobedience. And partial surrender is still control in disguise.

SHE Walks in Faith

This week, we’re doing things differently:

  • pray before you plan anything

  • invite God into the small decisions (not just the big ones)

  • pause when you feel overwhelmed and say, “God, You go first”

  • stop treating prayer like a reaction—make it your foundation

🩷 Prayer

Lord, Forgive me for the times I’ve treated You like my last option instead of my first choice. Teach me to come to You before I try to figure everything out on my own. Help me trust You fully—even when I don’t understand. I don’t want to just include You in my plans… I want You to lead them. Amen.
