Faithful in the Work

Sometimes we separate parts of our lives into categories. Church is spiritual. Prayer is spiritual. Reading the Bible is spiritual. But work? That’s just… work. Emails. Meetings. Deadlines. Responsibilities.

Sometimes I like to ask a simple question... if you could do any job in the world, what would it be?

Not the job that sounds impressive. Not the job someone else expects of you. But the one that makes you feel alive. The kind of work where you lose track of time. The kind that uses the gifts and talents God placed inside of you. Because the truth is, God created each of us with unique abilities, passions, and skills. And those gifts weren’t given randomly. They were given to be stewarded. For me, I’ve thought about this before, and I have a few. Part of me would love to open my own dog rescue and spend my days helping animals find safe homes. Another part of me thinks about planning events at a memory care home for people with Alzheimer’s—I don’t even know exactly what it would look like, but something weekly just to make them smile. And then there’s the part of me that would absolutely love to be an interior designer… preferably with an unlimited budget. I also would LOVE to be a tour guide for those riding horses on the beach. Give me a horse, a bathing suit, and the ocean... sold! And honestly, another dream job would be running a charter fishing tour somewhere on the beach with my husband. He’d handle the fishing part, because he loves being out on the water and actually catching the fish. I’d mostly just be there for the sunshine, the ocean, manage the playlist and good vibes, OH and the snacks. Clearly I have a few dream jobs floating around in my head. But the point is, those desires often point to something deeper—the way God wired us. Because the truth is, God created each of us with unique abilities, passions, and skills. And those gifts weren’t given randomly. They were given to be stewarded.

Yet scripture paints a different picture. In Colossians 3:23, Paul writes, "work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people." Notice he doesn’t say some things. He says whatever you do. Your work. Your responsibilities. Your effort. Your contribution. All of it can be done as an offering to God. That means the way we approach our work matters.

Showing up prepared. Doing things with excellence. Being trustworthy. Working diligently. Those things are not just professional habits. They can be acts of faithfulness. Sometimes people think ambition and obedience are opposites. That if you care about growing in your work, advancing in your career, or building something meaningful, it must mean you are chasing the world. But scripture doesn’t say to work half-heartedly. It says work with your whole heart. Not for applause. Not for status. Not for recognition. But for the Lord. And every achievement, every pay raise, and every promotion... that's a gift from God, not your place of employment.

As Christian women, our priority should always be our home. Our relationship with God. Our marriage. Our family. Those things matter deeply. But being faithful to those priorities doesn’t mean our work has no purpose. For many families, both the husband and the wife work to provide stability, steward opportunities, and build a future together. There is nothing unfaithful about working hard to provide for your household. In fact, responsibility and diligence are things scripture repeatedly encourages. Your work can be a place where you practice integrity. A place where you serve others. A place where you steward the gifts God gave you. A place where your character reflects Christ.

Stepping into new responsibilities and new opportunities feels a little like a career glow up. But not in the flashy, look-at-me kind of way. More in the quiet realization that God sometimes grows us through opportunity. Through doors we didn’t expect. Through challenges that stretch us. Through moments that require courage and trust. Sometimes growth looks like obedience. Sometimes it feels like stepping into something that feels a little bigger than what you're ready for. I’ve found myself there more than once. And in those moments I always used to tell myself, “fake it until you make it.” But one day I caught myself and thought, wait… “I’ll fake it until God makes it.” Because the truth is, if you’re standing in that opportunity, God got you there. God opened that door. God gave you the challenge. God trusted you with the responsibility. And He’s not going to throw you to the wolves and walk away. He’ll be there every step of the way. Through the next door. Through the next challenge. Through the next promotion. So girl… fake it until God makes it. And when I say “makes it,” I don’t mean the world’s version of success. I mean the moment you realize you’ve grown into the very thing He called you to.

So whatever season of work you are in right now—whether you love your job. Whether it feels ordinary. Whether it feels challenging. Keep showing up faithfully. Because when you work with your whole heart, as Colossians says, your work stops being just a job. It becomes an act of worship.

SHE Walks in Faith

Your work is not separate from your faith. It is one of the places where your faith is lived out. When you work with integrity, diligence, humility, and excellence, you reflect the character of Christ to the people around you. Whether your work is in the home, outside the home, or both—what matters most is the heart behind it. Faithfulness always matters to God.

🩷 Prayer

Lord, thank you for the work You have placed in front of me. Help me approach it with integrity, diligence, and humility. Remind me that every responsibility is an opportunity to honor You. Teach me to work with my whole heart, not for recognition, but as an offering to You. Amen.
